Ferulic Acid
A plant-derived antioxidant, a phenolic compound found in plant cell walls, best known as the stabiliser in "CE ferulic" serums. It props up vitamins C and E, extending how long that combined antioxidant activity holds up, and contributes its own antioxidant support on top of the two more famous actives. It is usually dosed below 1% by design, since its studied role is to reinforce the trio rather than to headline on its own.

How it’s thought to work
Studied for association with stabilising and extending a vitamin C plus E antioxidant network, which helps that combination stay active in a formula and, by extension, on skin for longer. On its own the appearance evidence is more limited than as part of that trio, since most of the supporting research studies the three actives together rather than ferulic acid alone. It is also fairly stable in its own right, part of why it was chosen as the third leg of the original CE ferulic formulation.
Adding ferulic acid to a vitamin C and E solution stabilized the formula and roughly doubled its measured photoprotection for skin.

- Is ferulic acid fairy-dusted when it sits below the 1% line?
- Not in a CE-ferulic formula. Ferulic is meant to sit around 0.5% there. Its job is to stabilise the vitamin C and E, not to headline, so a low position on the label is by design rather than a sign of under-dosing.
